To legally practice driving before taking the your driver license test,
you must have an instruction permit.
- If you are enrolled in a driver’s education class,
you can get an instruction permit when you are 15.
- If you are not enrolled in a driver’s education
class, you can get a permit when you are 15½ or older, if you
successfully pass the
written test.
How to apply for an instruction permit
- Visit a
driver licensing office.
- Bring the following with you:

Proof of identification.
- Cash or check to pay $20 fee.
- If you are under 18, a completed
Parental Authorization Affidavit. Your parents must provide proof of
their identity and relationship to you.
- If you are enrolled in a driver’s education class,
the signed application from your driving school instructor.
- Take a vision test, which includes color recognition.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to have an instruction permit before I get
a license?
- If you are under 18, you must have an instruction permit
for at least 6 months before you can get your first driver license.
- If you are over 18, you may apply at any time; an
instruction permit is only required to practice driving.
How long is my instruction permit valid?
The permit is valid for one year, and one renewal is allowed. The fee for an
instruction permit is $20.
If my instruction permit has expired, do I have to retake the
written test?
The written test is valid for 2 years from the date it was taken. So if it
has been expired more than 2 years, you will have to retake the written test.
